The Teaching Garden at Governors Island
The GrowNYC Teaching Garden at Governors Island is a one acre urban farm that aims to engage, excite, and educate its visitors in all aspects of urban farming. We offer field trips at the Teaching Garden to NYC youth, giving kids the opportunity to plant, water, harvest, and cook the garden's wide array of vegetables, herbs, and fruits. Greenmarket Youth Education connects thousands of New York City schoolchildren in grades K-12 with Greenmarkets and farmers each year. Our fun, interactive Greenmarket School Tours help children gain an understanding of farming in our region and how their food choices impact their bodies, their communities and their environment. We also offer Greenmarket Professional Tours for adults which focus on Greenmarket's history, mission, operations, and marketing efforts. All tours of Greenmarkets are currently paused due to covid 19.
School Gardens
Our mission is to inspire, promote and facilitate the creation of sustainable gardens in public schools throughout New York City. The program was created in 2010 under the name “Grow to Learn” and since then, has established a network of over 800 school gardens in all five boroughs. Our Schools Gardens program offers free materials, resources, funding, and technical support to DOE Public and Charter K-12 schools.
Teens in the South Bronx tackle food access and social justice in our two part youth development program. During the school year, students tend local gardens while also running seasonal farmstands, providing their communities with fresh produce and nutrition education workshops. In the summer, paid internships allow teens to continue gardening and leach as they learn, working with younger students on community wide health initiatives.
GrowNYC’s Zero Waste Schools Program (ZWS)* has helped NYC public schools create effective recycling programs since 2010. In that time, we have worked with over 500 schools and seen first-hand the real change that can happen when all members of the school community work together to make a difference. NYC schools can have a huge impact and help our city achieve Zero Waste by 2030!
