Greenmarket at Home: August

Updated: Apr 6, 2021

The “At Greenmarket” video series continues with August's installment in three parts.

Part I introduces the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). Through this program, low-income New Yorkers ages 60+ receive a booklet of $20 worth of vouchers for free fruits and vegetables which can be used in farmers markets across NYC. There are five vouchers in each booklet, each valued at $4.

In a typical year, these booklets are distributed at senior centers. With those centers closed this year, the Department for the Aging mailed the booklets to all who requested them. Vouchers must be used by November 30, 2020. You can learn all about this program in the video here.

Part II is full of colorful, mouth-watering images of the glorious abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables that are available in the Greenmarkets throughout NYC in the summer. The video features summer squash – not just zucchini, but a wide range of squashes in a fabulous array of colors from brilliant gold to deep forest green.

The video includes squash fun facts - for example, the word, “squash” comes from the Narragansett Native American language, meaning, “eaten raw or uncooked”. There are also suggestions for ways to prepare and eat this delicious vegetable (fun fact – botanically, it is a fruit!). Click here to learn more.

Part III is a new feature in which we will introduce a Greenmarket farmer. In this video, you will meet one of the Greenmarket farmers - Ana Rodriguez Angel of Angel Family Farm. Ana is a graduate of GrowNYC’s New Farmer Development Program (now called Farm Beginnings.). She and her family have been farming in upstate New York for 15 years. She sells amazing produce at the Corona Greenmarket on Fridays and at the 4th Ave Sunset Park Greenmarket on Saturdays. Click here to view this video, where she presents some of her summer produce.
