Summer is officially here and while our strawberry harvest has slowed, many of our other fruits and vegetables are begining to ramp up production!
This week we donated our produce to another great organization, the Black Feminist Project. The Black Feminist Project is an organization whose programming focuses on food justice and reproductive justice while exploring the intersections of race, class, and gender. They enrich the lives of, and restore justice, joy, and health to Black woman, girls, and non-men (otherwise known as MaGes). We are very excited to be supporting them by providing produce that will be included in their food boxes that are delivered to families in the South Bronx. This week we donated about 160 pounds of produce including
Lavender (1.5 lbs), Mint (1 lbs), Kale (20 lbs, not pictured), Lettuce (5 lbs, not pictured)
Swiss Chard (22 lbs),
Collard greens (60 lbs),
Beets (25 lbs),
Carrots (9 lbs),
Basil (6.5 lb, which they will process into pesto for their food boxes),
and mixed berries (8.5 lbs of currents, gooseberries, and the last of our strawberries) which they will process into jam for their food boxes.
We are excited to provide fresh, local, produce for their food boxes!
In other news, here are a few of our plant updates from this week...
Last week our cucumbers were tiny little spiky babies, this week they are huge! They are not quite ready to be picked (as they still have some little bumps and spikes) but they will definitely be ready next week. Our zucchini's have also grown a lot in the last week too and will be ready to harvest by next week.
We have our first baby eggplant.
Our tomatillo plants have produced husks. Tomatillos grow from the outside in, so the first thing to develop is the outer husk, then the tomatillo starts growing inside the husk. They should be ready to harvest in a few weeks.
Our purple cabbage are begining to form small heads.
And so are our cauliflowers!
Our concord grapes have begun to form. They will turn dark purple when they are ready to harvest in a few months. They are growing beautifully on the trellis we built for them last year.
Our prickly pear cactus that started flowering last week is in full bloom!
Check out our video to learn more about this cactus :)
Stay tuned for more updates!
