Teaching Garden Update May 14, 2021

Updated: May 20, 2021

The bees are buzzing, the birds are singing, and all the plants in the teaching garden are happily growing in the spring sun. This week in the teaching garden we are busy adding compost to all of our garden beds.

We started by applying compost to our fruiting plants (tomatoes, peppers, and squash) which all require tons of nitrogen from the soil to fruit. Next we added compost to our long-haul plants which we will harvest from until late summer (kale, collards, and swiss chard). Soon, we will add compost to the rest of our plants (lettuce, radishes, beets, carrots, and more!).

Our beds look so much better with a layer of compost on top!

In other exciting garden news, we covered our strawberry beds!

We cover our strawberry beds with a mesh-type fabric which prevents birds, squirrels, and other pests (could never be chickens!) from eating our delicious strawberries either before they are ripe, or before we can harvest them. Our strawberry beds are flowering all over and some strawberries have even begun to form. It will be another week or so before these strawberries ripen and we will be swimming in fruit.

Our radishes - which we are growing in abundance this year- are forming into their recognizable shape and our carrots have germinated! Soon we will thin out our carrots to give them a little more space to grow.

Finally, we are excited to be working with students again during our Get Outside program!

If you have students aged k-12 who you are interested in bringing to the garden for some fun outdoor garden programming, there is still space to sign up! Visit our eventbrite to reserve your spot during the rest of May and June. Email any questions to ebrown@grownyc.org.

Finally, our paw paw trees are flowering. Paw paws have beautiful purple flowers that hang upside down. Hopefully we will get some paw paw fruits later this summer.

Check back in a few weeks for more teaching garden updates! Happy spring :)
